What Is A Metal-On-Metal Hip Replacement?

With metal-on-metal hip replacement devices, both the ball and socket components are made of metal. This type of implant has been used in total hip replacement surgeries and hip resurfacing procedures.

Metal-on-metal devices were expected to last longer than other hip implants because of their durability. Metal-on-metal hip replacements have been used to avoid complications from debris and wearing from implants made of plastic/polyethylene.

It turns out, however, that much like polyethylene, metal surfaces shed small particles of debris. In addition, metal surfaces can corrode, giving off metal ions. The metal debris (ions and particles) can enter the space around the implant, as well as the bloodstream.

In some patients, this can cause pain or swelling around the hip, osteolysis and, in severe cases, permanent damage to the surrounding tissue and internal organs such as the liver or kidneys.

Potential Complications From Defective Metal-On-Metal Implants Include:

  • Implant replacement
  • Serious or lingering hip and/or groin pain
  • Loosening of the implant
  • Clicking or crunching of hip
  • Fracture of hip bone
  • Swelling or infection
  • Limited mobility
  • Joint failure

Small Metal Filings From The Joint's Components Are Also Causing Blood Toxicity, Leading To Additional Serious Medical Disorders, Including:

  • Cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle)
  • Impaired kidney (renal) function
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Psychological and neurological changes
