Pinnacle Hip Replacement

The Pinnacle hip replacement system is a hip-replacing device developed by DePuy ASR. These replacement devices, designed for younger patients, have a greater range of motion and are stronger than traditional hip replacement devices. Many of these devices are failing and the professional team of lawyers at Cutter Law P.C. is here to represent you and your interests.

Variations Of The Pinnacle Hip Replacement System

The DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system comes with many material combinations for bearing surfaces (where the ball head fits into the socket) of the device. The variations include:

  • Ceramic-on-polyethylene
  • Ceramic-on-ceramic
  • Ceramic-on-metal
  • Metal-on-metal
  • Metal-on-polyethylene

The reason for so many material combinations is to provide options for doctors based on the individual needs of the patient. The more durable the materials of the joint, the more freedom the patient would theoretically have to live an active lifestyle.

Problems And Complications Associated With The Pinnacle Hip Replacement Devices

Unfortunately, many severe side effects have been associated with the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement devices. The most common and severe complications include:

  • Metallosis — This is the medical term for heavy metal poisoning. If left untreated, this can be life-threatening.
  • Bone fracturing around the implant site — When the bone to which the device is fused fractures, cracks or breaks, it results in pain, difficulty walking and other adverse conditions.
  • Implant loosening from the bone — This is exactly as it sounds. The implant itself loosens and/or is removed from the bone surfaces it is anchored to.
  • Dislocation of the implant — When the implant device becomes dislocated from itself, the ball falls out of the socket.

Many of these side effects and complications require revision surgery, meaning additional surgery (or surgeries) to correct the problems caused by the initial surgery or medical procedure. If you have suffered any of these complications and especially if you have had one or multiple revision surgeries, then please do not hesitate to contact our team of lawyers.

A Staggering Number Of Pinnacle Hip Replacement Lawsuits And Settlements

Many thousands of people have suffered complications and revision surgeries due to the failure of the Pinnacle hip replacement system. Of these thousands of individuals, more than 8,600 DePuy ASR cases were grouped together to be presented to a federal court. Of these 8,600 cases, parent company Johnson & Johnson was set to pay a total of $2.5 billion to settle 7,500 cases in 2013. DePuy ASR has since recalled the Pinnacle hip replacement system.
