The California product liability attorneys at Cutter Law P.C. are investigating claims involving Essure, a permanent birth control device for women marketed by Bayer Healthcare.

In 2013, Bayer bought Essure from Conceptus Inc., the original manufacturer of the contraceptive.

Essure, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, consists of two small coils that are implanted through the vagina into the fallopian tubes. After Essure is implanted, a barrier of tissue is formed around the implant that prevents sperm from reaching eggs.

Essure Side Effects

This device has demonstrated a strong tendency to migrate, which can lead to perforation of the fallopian tubes or the uterine wall. Additionally, women have experienced side effects including severe pain and cramping, blood clots, infection, pelvic pain, depression, weight gain, and extreme fatigue.

From 2002 to 2013, the FDA received approximately 988 reports citing adverse events related to Essure, with over 500 of them occurring in 2013.
