In 2018 (the most recent data available), there were 3,259 total fatal car accidents (The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). That number accounts for single-vehicle accidents, multi-vehicle accidents, and accidents with any of the following vehicle types:

Fatal Car Accidents Involving Pedestrians, Pickups, And SUVs

By the numbers from the IIHS, accidents with pedestrians, pickups, and SUVs take up the lion’s share of fatal accidents in California. Combined, they make for 43% of the total fatal car accidents in 2018. Of those types of accidents, pedestrians were the most commonly fatal (at 25%).

DUI Accident Statistics For California

While there isn’t enough data on the number of fatal car accidents in California where the driver had an estimated BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) of over 0.08%, 65% of drivers killed in car accidents in 2018 had a known BAC of one percentage or another (IIHS). That’s a shocking statistic. That means that more than 65% of the fatal accidents in the state happened after the driver had recently consumed alcohol.
