Keeping Teen Drivers Safe On The Road: Tips For Parents

Auto Accidents Blog / Keeping Teen Drivers Safe On The Road: Tips For Parents

Keeping Teen Drivers Safe On The Road

To many teenage drivers, a license means fun, friends, freedom, and independence. It is a rite of passage, for many, into early adulthood.

Unfortunately, younger drivers are most at risk for being involved in traffic accidents.

All parents of teenagers want their kids to be safe on the road. But they may not know how to keep their kids safe or what specific behaviors are most dangerous. Here are some common risk factors for teenage drivers:

  • Distracted driving: Many teenagers use their smartphones, access social media, and scan the radio while driving. They have a desire to stay connected at all times – including while they are driving. However, research shows that distracted driving is a leading risk for all drivers, but particularly for teens. Parents should consider implementing a “no-smartphone-use-while-driving” policy with their children. A zero-tolerance approach is the safest one. We also encourage parents to lead by example and remain focused while driving.
  • Peer pressure: Statistics show that teenagers who drive with teenage passengers in the car are more likely to be involved in an accident than teenagers who drive alone or with adult passengers.
  • Speeding: Excessive speeding is a dangerous habit for drivers of all ages. But teenagers have limited driving experience, which makes speeding all the more dangerous for them.
  • Drunk or drugged driving: Teenagers and alcohol (or drugs) is a dangerous combination. Many teenage drivers are falsely confident in their ability to drive safely while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Seat belt use: Research shows that teenage drivers are less likely to wear seatbelts than their adult counterparts. Parents should demonstrate seat belt use themselves and encourage their kids to use them while driving.

Parents, help keep your kids safe: Have frequent discussions with your kids about safe driving. Set your expectations high. Don’t be afraid to revoke your child’s driving privileges if he or she is not practicing safe driving habits.

Free attorney consultation: If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident, do not hesitate to contact an attorney from Cutter Law, P.C., to learn about your legal options. Call 888-285-3333.
