One of the most memorable cases that I’ve worked on involving a government that has been irresponsible with its property involved a grandmother who moved to the Sacramento area to be with her grandchildren and her daughter. She and her husband had spent their life working hard in the Bay Area, raising their children, doing right. They came to the Sacramento area to retire, and she had been here for just about a year when she was hit by a car in a park roadway.
It was a situation where there was a prison crew doing work on the property. They failed to maintain control of traffic at that park entrance, and it resulted in my client getting run over. Her foot was crushed. A woman who was supremely active, had an active lifestyle, exercised, and took care of three grandchildren was now basically rendered wheelchair-bound. She had a couple of hours a day where she could do anything. That was a case where the state of
California refused to do right by her. The city refused to do right by her. And we were able to achieve a very significant outcome for her and her family that has allowed her to reclaim a good quality of life, where she can still be with her grandchildren and enjoy the lifestyle that she moved to Sacramento to achieve.
