Can I sue my apartment complex for negligence?

Video Transcript

You can sue apartment complexes for negligence or unsafe living conditions, depending on the circumstances that happened in your individual case. But apartment complexes and property owners have a responsibility to keep their property reasonably safe for residents and for people that they invite to their homes, and free of hazards. Some common examples of hazards at apartment complexes are poor lighting, unmaintained stairs, or an example of a case that I have now is that the apartment complex allowed a dangerous animal to live in the building and he bit one of the other residents in the complex. And so apartment complex owners have a responsibility to keep the area safe, well-maintained, and free of hazards. Another example of apartment complex dangers are improper or poor security measures. So, when an apartment manager or property owner knows that their complex may have a security concern or security problem, it’s important for them to hire the appropriate security, install the appropriate locks, keep areas of concern well lit, and look out for their residents on their premises.
