California’s Laws on Bike Lanes & Sharing the Road

Video Transcript

In California, bicycles are allowed to share the road. If it’s a two-lane road, then cars can go around you and pass in the left lane. On a one lane road, bicycles need to stay to the right. And on a lot of larger roads, you might see a bike lane. That’s always a nice thing to have. If there’s a specific bike lane, then you’re allowed to be in the lane by yourself as a bicyclist. If it’s not a dedicated bike lane, then bicycles do need to yield to faster traffic for safety. But if it’s a quiet street and there’s nobody around, you’re allowed to take the lane.
