How To Drive Safely Around Semi Trucks And Large Vehicles

In California, you’ll come across far more semi-trucks and goods-transportation vehicles than anywhere else, especially during the holiday season. While seeing trucks on the road is a good sign for the state’s economy, trucks should spell danger for all other vehicles.

With the seemingly obvious danger surrounding accidents with trucks, you’d likely find yourself surprised at the number of people that forgo even the most simple precautions when coming across them on the road. So, to help potentially mitigate some of the fatal accidents associated with passenger vehicle collisions with trucks, Cutter Law P.C. decided to do something. In the following guide, we’ll look at how to drive safely around semi-trucks and large vehicles. Let’s get started!

First, Some Statistics

Before we get into steps you can take to reduce your chances of an accident with trucks, let’s talk about a few statistics surrounding semi-trucks and other large vehicles.

First, it’s far from uncommon for a semi-truck trailer to be up to 75 feet long and weigh over 80,000 pounds. Therefore, the stopping distance for a truck of that size traveling at 65mph and in perfect road conditions (no rain, etc.) is at least 525 feet. Factors that increase that distance include worn-out brakes, distracted drivers, and roadway conditions.

Second, in a significant number of accidents with semi-trucks and passenger vehicles, the passenger vehicle driver caused the collision. If truck drivers aren’t causing these accidents, then drivers of passenger vehicles need to practice giving them the space they need to operate the semi-truck safely.

We compiled these statistics from this publication on the National Highway Traffic Safety website. Check it out to learn more about truck accident statistics.

Seven Safety Tips For Driving Safely Around Semi Trucks And Large Vehicles

Okay, now that we’ve talked a little about the statistics regarding passenger vehicle accidents with large vehicles, let’s get into how to drive safely around semi-trucks. The following seven tips can go a long way towards helping prevent fatal accidents, so please make sure you commit them to memory. Remember, in California, semi-truck accidents make up a more significant percentage of fatal accidents since trucks are more common.

So, without further ado, here are the Cutter Law P.C. tips on how to drive safely around semi-trucks and large vehicles:

  1. Never ride alongside a truck. If you must pass, do so quickly and safely.
  2. Do not pass trucks on the right-hand side.
  3. If you must pass a truck, do so on a straight section of the road and as quickly as is safe.
  4. Give trucks enough room to execute a turn. Remember, they take a lot more space to turn than any passenger vehicle on the road.
  5. If a truck wants to pass, make it easy for the driver and move over when safe.
  6. Do not brake suddenly when in front of a truck. Remember, it takes a lot more time for a truck to stop going 65mph than it does for you in your passenger vehicle.
  7. Never cut off a truck. Period.
