What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a system that uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the patient to produce extra collagen. This focused ultrasound is delivered at a depth of 1.5 millimeters, 3 millimeters, or 4.5 millimeters. In addition to helping skin look firm, collagen is used to treat wrinkles and signs of aging skin.
Ultherapy treatment is delivered with 20 short bursts, each burst is known as a line. In studies provided to the FDA, data was given based on patients who received 50 lines of treatment. After Ultherapy was approved by the FDA, the manufacturer recommended patients receive between 300 and 325 lines each.
Merz and Ulthera Allegations
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Ultherapy to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and on the eyebrow, and to reduce lines and wrinkles on the chest.
Additionally, even though the FDA rejected Merz’s proposed labeling for Ultherapy treatment—which included instructions for physicians to use Ultherapy on the patient’s entire face—Merz distributed training materials to physicians that included instructions for Ultherapy use on the patient’s full face.
