Actos is a medication prescribed to help control Type 2 diabetes in adults.
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July 1999, Actos (pioglitazone) is also marketed under the names Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met XR and Duetact.
In September 2010, the FDA announced preliminary data from an ongoing 10-year study suggested that there may be a possible connection between bladder cancer and the use of Actos. (FDA safety announcement)
In July 2011, regulators in France and Germany suspended sales of Actos due to an increased risk of bladder cancer. Takeda Pharmaceuticals agreed to formally recall the drug from the French market, but sales continued in the rest of Europe and in the United States.
On Aug. 4, 2011, the FDA approved an updated label for Actos and other pioglitazone-containing medicines to include a safety information warning that the use of pioglitazone for more than a year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
In April 2014, Takeda and its partner, Eli Lilly & Co., were ordered to pay $9 billion in damages. The award was ultimately reduced by 99 percent to $36.8 million by a judge. To date, there have been thousands of cases filed against the manufacturers.
In March 2015, it was reported that Takeda proposed to settle more than 8,000 lawsuits in federal and state courts in the United States. With this settlement, the company would pay more than $2.2 billion to resolve the claims, which is an estimated payout of about $275,000 per case.
