Exploding E-Cigarettes: The FDA Explores The Dangers

Defective Products Blog / Exploding E-Cigarettes: The FDA Explores The Dangers

As e-cigarettes continue to grow in popularity, the Food and Drug Administration is taking a closer look at one specific danger associated with these devices: explosions.

From 2009 to January 2016, there were 134 reports of e-cigarettes becoming very hot, exploding or catching fire. In many cases, the explosions have caused serious burns, mouth injuries, disfigurement, and other injuries. Some victims have required hospitalization and skin grafts. A few serious injuries and deaths have been reported.

This is not the first time the FDA has eyed the e-cigarette industry. In 2016, it announced that it would begin regulating e-cigarettes, requiring manufacturers to submit their devices and ingredient lists for review.

In April 2017, the FDA is hosting a public workshop exploring battery safety concerns. Scientific and medical experts, as well as e-cigarette manufacturers, retailers, government workers, and other stakeholders, are encouraged to attend.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, there are more than 250 brands of e-cigarettes on the market. These battery-operated devices are a popular alternative to cigarettes, as they deliver nicotine without having to burn tobacco.

However, the health benefits are few, if any. E-cigarettes still deliver nicotine, harmful chemicals, and known carcinogens to the user. The fact that e-cigarettes can explode only adds to the dangers of using them.

Manufacturers of exploding or malfunctioning e-cigarettes can be held accountable when their devices cause injuries or harm. Victims may be eligible for significant compensation.

If you or someone close to you has been injured by an exploding e-cigarette, you deserve to learn about your legal options. Call Cutter Law, P.C., for a free case evaluation: 888-285-3333.
